I have been reading The Well-Trained Mind: A Guide to Classical Education at Home by Susan Wise Bauer and Jessie Wise. This book is on my summer reading list and I am learning a lot. I mention that just so I can mention this:
One of the resource recommendations included in this book for beginning readers is Bob Books.
Bob Books comes in several sets with the first set of books using only phonectically sounding words. Oftentimes beginning reading books will include words that are not phonetically spelled like "could" and "are" which can cause some frustration in the beginning reading stages. Bob Books consists of several sets of books which progressively become more difficult for the young reader. You can view samples by clicking on the image above.
If you are experienced with using Bob Books, please leave a comment to let us know what your thoughts are regarding this series. I am thinking about ordering the first set for my oldest daughter who is still learning her letter sounds but will be ready to start reading simple books soon.

I have just been informed that Bob Books can be found at your local library. This may be a more economical option if you just want to check them out before making a big purchase:). I'll be getting mine from there - Yay!!!!
I have owned the Bob Books for about 13 years, and have used them with quite a few of my kids. I like that they are completely phonetic, so they are a good first set that transition easily from learning sounds into blending words. However, the kids did not take to them as well - none of my 4 readers has ever read all the books. They didn't find the stories as engaging. I really like the Now I'm Reading series. They are the same idea, but better. Each story contains a high level of repetition, each line adding a new word. The reader feels successful, and the stories seem to be more entertaining. (And they have stickers!)
