And the winners are ...
The winner of the "Stepping Out and Writing a New Form of Poetry" award is Faith with her poem The Hungry Fox . Faith chose a limerick format for her poem and did a great job using rhyme and action words. Faith's copy of her poem was also illustrated! Enjoy!
The Hungry Fox
The fox jumped to catch a mouse,
he jumps as high as a grouse,
he lands his face in the snow,
the hungry fox was too slow,
the red fox went to his house.
------------------------------------------
The winner of "The Poem with the Most Character" award is Jeffrey. His poem, A Brat and His Tiger, is filled with tons of personality and makes you smile. Jeffrey has a neat rhythm and rhyme happening throughout his poem. Enjoy!
A Brat And His Tiger
Calvin is a child.
Hobbes is a tiger.
Calvin is wild.
Hobbes is a biter.
Calvin and Hobbes fight,
even if its not right .
They bite on sight.
It makes them look a fright.
They get in trouble a lot.
When they get caught,
they think they're in a tight spot.
But maaybeee they're not.
-----------------------------------------
The winner of "The Best Revised and Edited Poem" award is Abby. After Abby completed her editing and revising processes, her poem, My Sweet Cat, took on a life of it's own. Her poem will make you smile and has excellent rhythm and rhyme. Enjoy!
My Sweet Cat
My cat likes to purr
All day and all night
She's a very sweet cat
But she goes left and right!
She knocks into things
Cause she can't see just right
But a super smart cat
When she turns on the light!
-----------------------------------------
The final winner is Kara with her poem My Frosty Winter Dream . Kara's poem is awarded "The Poem with the Best Imagery" award. When consulting with a couple of colleagues, it was agreed upon that Kara's poem had a poetic edge and is deserving of a "Grand Prize". Her poem incorporates excellent description and imagery and has a nice flow of rhyming couplets. Enjoy!
My Frosty Winter Dream
The snow is gently sprinkling
Out in the cold winter night.
The glittery trees are twinkling
Because of the bright moonlight.
The cool breeze is blowing
I can feel its frosty bite.
The stars are softly glowing —
My dream is perfectly white.

Quatrain Poems
Students did a great job on their quatrain poems during the month of January. If your child completed a quatrain poem and would like to have it posted here, then please email me his/her writing. Below are some of the quatrain poems that students worked so diligently on - Great Job everyone!
In winter weather is chilly
It makes my face cold
Kids like to be silly
and crazy and bold
~ Jeffrey - grade 2
When water is frozen its ice
I think that is nice
When the wind is freezing
I start sneezing
~ Jeffrey - grade 2
God's Winter Poem
The ice is slippery,
the storm gets worse and worse.
God flicks His finger and the sky goes clear -
And God's sparkles on the earth appear.
~ Olivia - grade 3
The slippery ice is sparkling bright.
The snow is cold and very white,
When the snow falls from the sky,
It makes the snow so very high.
~ Shekinah - grade 2
Happy Birthday, Jesus
I can't wait until Christmas.
The presents are under the tree.
It's all about you, Jesus.
We worship you in our family.
~ Abby - grade 2
The Cold Weather
Cold water and slush,
Snow is falling down.
When I step it goes mush,
When I slip I frown.
~ Caleb - grade 2
One day it was sprinkling
And it was sparkling.
It was so glistening.
And we had so much fun glittering.
~ Jordyn - grade 3

Alphabet Sentences
In February, students in grade 2 and 3 were asked to communicate with Mrs. Holder by writing a sentence that used all (or at least most) of the letters of the alphabet. The students did a fabulous job! Here is what they came up with:
A buzzing bee climbs down the very big elephant's foot and with a quick jerk, expresses his feelings ~ Sarah (grade 2)
When I first saw our new house, I knew that it was almost done. ~ Jordyn (grade 2)
The quick figure skater performed awesomely at her competition placing third. ~ Jelisa (grade 3)
The big cat had little kittens with funny faces and pretty eyes. ~ Olivia (grade 2)
In May, the quick jerky zebra rescued a very nice fox that was left kicking around in a prickly bush. ~ Austin (grade 3)
The queen's name is Zecholoh and she is nice and agreeable because she likes dancing and juggling and she had a little duck and it was amazing and almost funny actually it was very funny because she liked to play her xylophone. ~ Daveena (grade 3)
Charmaine loves John's lazy pet goat's queen, Fox and Webber. The End. ~ Charmaine (grade 2)
Avi mixed some quail eggs and beef pate in a hot calzone wrap with wacky jam. ~ Matthew (grade 3)
